Trauma and Attachment Pathway

Children who experience trauma and attachment difficulties can often have difficulty expressing and regulating emotions. They can internalise and externalise stress reactions and as a result experience significant depression, anxiety or anger.

Including:

  • Trauma exposure
  • Attachment difficulties
  • Looked after children
  • Adopted
  • Children living outside the family home

Trauma Exposure

Trauma exposure can result in children suffering with difficulties such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression. It can impact upon relationships, emotional regulation, cognitive delays and negative coping strategies.

Trauma exposure can also be expressed in a number of ways which interfere with school functioning including learning problems, lower grades, poor attendance, increases in problem behaviour, lower IQ, increased risk of bullying, increased suspensions.

Our work includes rebuilding and enhancing current attachments. The importance of attachment is key for children to learn to trust, regulate their emotions and develop a sense of self.

A secure attachment doesn’t mean a child won’t ever feel fear or anxiety, these are normal human reactions, it means the child will be able to rely on their caregiver for comfort and protection. Through these attachments children can improve their overall mental health.
